  • 2014 Honor Flight Photos
    Photos from Honor Flights that I and the family greeted as they arrived at Dulles International Airport, Reagan National Airport and the World War II Memorial in Virginia. These flights bring World War II veterans into Washington D.C. to see the World War II Memorial.

  • 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Cedar Creek, Virginia Photos
    Photos taken from the living history march of the 50th Georgia during the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Cedar Creek, Virginia (October 19, 1864). Our group retraced the 50th Georgia from Hupp's Hill southwest through Strausburg, Virginia to Fisher's Hill, then followed their route northeast to cross Cedar Creek, and attack the 8th Corp and 19th Corps before ending up at Belle Grove Plantation. The march was about 14 miles in total with the final 9 miles being done in real time beginning at 1 AM on October 19, 2014. Other photos before the march were taken on October 17, 2014. These other photos were of the Battle of Harrisonburg, Virginia (June 6, 1862), the Battle of Tom's Brook, Virginia (October 9, 1864), the Battle of Fisher's Hill, Virginia (September 22, 1864), and the Battle of Hupp's Hill, Virginia (October 13, 1864). Some photos were taken by Paul Boccadoro and a photographer for the National Park Service - they are credited by caption on their photos.

    Photos taken on October 12, 2014 from the battlefields of Bristoe Station (October 14, 1863), Payne's Farm (or Mine Run on November 27, 1863), and Trevilian Station (June 11-12, 1864) - all in Virginia.

  • 150th Anniversary of the Battles of Fort Harrison and New Market Heights, Virginia Photos
    Photos from a couple days before the 150th Anniversary of the Battles of Fort Harrison (September 29, 1864) and New Market Heights (September 29, 1864). The photos were taken before and after the Campaign Before Richmond Reenactment Event from September 26-28, 2014. Other sites visited before the event began were from Spotsylvania Battlefield (Harris Farm), Massaponax Church, and the area of St. Peter's Church where George Washington was married.

    Photos taken on September 19, 2014 from several Civil War battlefields visited on the way to the 150th Anniversary of the Third Battle of Winchester, VA (September 19, 1864) events. The sites for First and Second Winchester, VA are no longer around due to urban development.

    Photos from the day long battlefield hike that I took on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 on the 152nd anniversary of the battle and the actual day of the week that it took place on.

  • 200th Anniversary of the Bombardment of Fort McHenry, Baltimore, Maryland Photos
    Photos taken on September 13, 2014 of the Inner Harbor, Federal Hill Park, and Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland on the 200th Anniversary of the Bombardment of the fort by the British on the night of September 13, 1814 during the War of 1812. The second Star-Spangled Sailabration event was also taking place (the first one was in 2012 to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the beginning of the War of 1812), so there are photos from several of the Tall Ships and modern naval vessels that were in port. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Team was also flying below the low cloud deck. The event finished up with a great fireworks display that stretched from the Inner Harbor to Fort McHenry.

  • 200th Anniversary of the Battle of North Point, Maryland Photos
    Photos taken on September 6, 2014 during the reenactment of the Battle of North Point, Maryland. The battle from the War of 1812 took place on September 12, 1814.

  • 152nd Anniversary of the Battle of Ox Hill, Virginia Photos
    Photos taken on September 5, 2014 at Ox Hill Battlefield Park in Fairfax, Virginia. This is the only portion of the larger battlefield that has been preserved. The battle took place on September 1, 1862. The Battle of Ox Hill (Confederate name) was known as the Battle of Chantilly by the Union troops. Union Generals Stevens and Kearny were killed during this battle.

    Photos taken on September 5, 2014 while visiting Ball's Bluff Battlefield Regional Park in Leesburg, Virginia. The battle took place on October 21, 1861.

  • 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Bladensburg, Maryland Photos
    Photos taken on September 5, 2014 while visiting some of the sites of the War of 1812 Battle of Bladensburg, Maryland. The battle took place on August 24, 1814. The result of this battle was a British victory and was followed by the British entering Washington, DC and burning the Capitol Building, the White House and several other areas of the city.

  • The Connell's and Fort Delaware Photos
    Photos taken on August 30, 2014 while attending a birthday celebration at my friend Brian Connell's mom's place. It was for him and several other family members who all have August birthdays. The next day on August 31, 2014, we joined his family in a visit to Fort Delaware, Delaware. Fort Delaware was an active fort up until just after World War II, but during the Civil War it was also a prisoner of war camp for Confederate prisoners.

    Photos from our family vacation to visit several sites in Pennsylvania. The photos were taken between August 13-24, 2014. The sites we visited were: State Museum of Pennsylvania and State Capital building in Harrisburg, National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, Hershey World and Hershey Park, Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg, Pennsylvania Grand Canyon bounded by Leonard Harrison and Colton Point State Parks, Kate's sister Linda's house, The Little League World Series in Williamsport, and finished up in Pittsburgh.

    Photos taken on August 9, 2014 on the 152nd Anniversary of the Battle of Cedar Mountain (August 9, 1862). The battlefield is located to the southwest of Culpepper, Virginia.

    Photos from a July 28 to August 4, 2014 trip that Kate and Aurora took to see her best friend in Massachusetts and then to see her sister in Pennsylvania.

  • 150th Anniversary of the Petersburg, Virginia Siege Photos
    Photos from August 2, 2014 that I took while visiting several locations around Petersburg, Virginia with Jeff and Kyle (reenacting buddies). Photos include: City Point, Western Front forts of Petersburg, National Cemeteries of City Point and Poplar Grove, Blandford Church and Cemetery, Ream's Station Battlefield, Hatcher's Run Battlefield, White Oak Road Battlefield, Five Forks Battlefield, Sutherland Station Battlefield, the spot where General A.P. Hill was shot and killed just days before Lee surrendered to Grant, and Lee's Headquarters in Colonial Heights. Great day and the weather held off enough for us to see everything.

    Photos from the Pritchard House and farm where several battles took place from 1862 to 1864 in the Kernstown-Winchester, Virginia area. We visited on July 26, 2014, which was three days after the 150th anniversary of the 2nd Battle of Kernstown (July 23, 1864). Part of the site was also where the 1st Battle of Kernstown took place in March 23, 1862 and the 2nd Battle of Winchester took place on June 13, 1863.

    Photos from additional trips to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in 2014. They include: (1) February trip for a reenacting group meeting and (2) a July 19, 2014 trip for a Gettysburg Foundation sponsored Adams Seminar talk.

    Photos from the 4th of July family vacation. Photos include the visit to Jumonville Glen Battlefield, Fort Necessity Battlefield (on the 260th Anniversary of the battle - took place on July 3, 1754), Brentwood, PA 4th of July parade, Point State Park during the Three Rivers Regatta, Pirate 8-2 win against the Phillies, Pittsburgh 4th of July fireworks, McConnells Mill State Park in Pennsylvania, Moraine State Park in Pennsylvania,and finally Niagara Falls in New York and Canada - Aurora's first country outside of the United States.

  • 150th Anniversary of the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery Living History Photos
    Photos from the living history event held at Petersburg National Battlefield, Virginia from June 13-15, 2014. The event focused on the charge of the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery Regiment that lost 604 of the 900 men within 10 minutes while attacking Colquitt's Salient on June 18, 1864. There are photos from other Richmond, Virginia sites before the event. There are also some photos from other sites on the Eastern Front of the Petersburg Battlefield. Other photos from Pamplin Historical Park were taken after the event.

  • 2014 Volunteer Day in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania Photos
    Photos from the June 7, 2014 Volunteer Day in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania that the family and I had with the other Friends of Gettysburg members. I helped build fences while Kate and Aurora helped paint the names on headstones in the National Cemetery.

  • 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Cold Harbor Photos
    Photos taken from a trip on May 31, 2014 to see the battlefields of Totopotomoy Creek, Cold Harbor, Glendale, New Market Heights, and Forts Harrison, Brady, Hoke, Johnson, Gregg, and Gilmer. All of these locations are to the northeast to southeast of Richmond. It was the 150th Anniversary weekend of the Totopotomoy Creek and Cold Harbor battles.

    Photos from the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of North Anna taken on May 24, 2014. This was the actual anniversary of the Attack at Ox Ford. The Battle of North Anna took place between May 23-26, 1864. The photos show the earthworks that the Confederates created to defend their position and the path leads to the area where the Union forces attacked from.

    Photos taken on May 18, 2014 during the reenactment of the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of New Market, Virginia. The battle took place on May 15, 1864.

    Photos taken between May 10-11, 2014 of the Living History event that the Liberty Rifles participated in during the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, Virgina. The battle took place from May 8-21, 1864. Most of the photos included in this page were taken by National Park Service photographers that included our group and myself, so I want to thank them for taking the photos. The battle took place on May 5-6, 1864.     Photos from the living history immersion event that took place from April 25-27, 2014 to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Bermuda Hundred Campaign southwest of Richmond, Virginia. The photos were taken on April 26, 2014. The original campaign took place from May 6-20, 1864.

  • Stiefvater April 2014 Visit Photos
    Photos from the visit during Spring Break from my cousin's wife and kids. I picked them up in Pittsburgh and drove them to several sites and our house before the return to Pittsburgh. We stopped at the Flight 93 National Memorial, Gettysburg National Military Park, Washington, DC, Great Falls Park, Antietam National Battlefield, and the Sidling Hill Syncline between April 17-19, 2014.

  • White Oak Museum and Winter Quarters Photos
    Photos from the second day (January 4, 2014) of the Winter Quarters Event at White Oak Museum in Falmouth, Virginia, where elements of the Union 6th Corps had their winter quarters from November 1862 to June 1863. Other units used the area for winter quarters at other times during the war. Photos from the White Oak Museum are included, as well as from the new Stafford Civil War Park.
